Safe Growth is marked at $1,847 near the open, -2.9% versus Wednesday's published update and -1.1% for September (August locked closed at +8.84%, in the track record table below). This is a genuinely rough, broad-based day — the first real rout since the Iran conflict widened last week.
Iran struck two US Navy warships directly with ballistic missiles overnight, a real escalation beyond the tanker and shipping attacks of the past week — this is now a direct US-military target, not just commercial vessels. Houthis separately reportedly seized the port city of Mokha to expand their control along Yemen's coast. There's no ceasefire and no talks underway; if anything Iran is signaling it's ready to escalate further. Brent hit $101 a barrel Wednesday, the highest since July, and Wall Street strategists are now revising 2027 crude forecasts higher — the framing has shifted from a temporary risk premium to a longer supply shock.
XLE (+0.1%) is the only roughly flat name in the book; everything else is meaningfully lower, including TMF (-4.5%) and NUGT (-9.1%) — even gold isn't catching the safe-haven bid you'd normally expect on a day like this, which we're flagging honestly rather than forcing a tidy explanation for. No trade before this update.
Bottom line: SG is down -2.9% today heading into tomorrow's CPI (Sep 11, 8:30am ET) — the final inflation reading before the Sep 16 Fed decision, landing on a war that's still actively escalating and an oil market now expected to stay elevated for years, not weeks. That's about as little room as the Fed has had all year to sound dovish.
